Meet Heather and Mr. Lonnie from the University of Florida!

Since their very first meeting, the two quickly found a natural rhythm built on storytelling, music, and meaningful conversation. Lonnie has a gift for sharing his life experiences — from his childhood in Mississippi and his time at Mississippi State, to his career in pharmaceuticals and his service in the merchant marines during WWII. Each visit brings a new story, often told with vivid detail and a deep sense of pride.

Above all, Lonnie loves talking about his family. He frequently shares stories about his late wife, reminiscing about the long country drives they used to take together and the simple moments that meant the most to them. He also lights up when speaking about his two sons, proudly showing Heather photos and updates whenever he can. It’s clear how much his family means to him.

Many of their visits include attending music programs together at Oak Hammock — something Lonnie always looks forward to and eagerly plans for. Whether they’re listening to live performances, flipping through old family photos, looking at birthday pictures, or even talking about listening to his old cassette tapes, their time together is filled with warmth and genuine connection. Heather often takes the role of listener, giving Lonnie space to reflect and share, which has made their bond even stronger.
