Meet Raquel and Helen from San Francisco State University

Over the past few months, Helen and Raquel have shared a journey filled with gentle moments of connection, care, and creativity. From their very first meeting—solving crossword puzzles and sharing lunch—to quiet mornings spent coloring or singing together, the pair has formed a bond rooted in empathy and understanding.

Helen, a former elementary school teacher with a love for acrylic painting, often lights up when talking about her childhood or showing off her art. Raquel has supported her memory challenges with grace, taking the time to write down names, revisit favorite topics, and simply be present. Together, they’ve done everything from exploring art displays in the hallway to admiring the fish tank and enjoying fresh watermelon during their spring meetings.

During one of their visits,  Helen seemed overwhelmed by a stressful encounter with another resident. Sensing her need for peace, Raquel led her outside to watch the hummingbirds. They walked for a while before sitting down to rest, and Helen repeatedly expressed how thankful she was. “I wanted to cry,” Raquel wrote, moved by her response to such a simple gesture.

Even when Helen is too tired to do much, they have found comfort in each other’s company—whether that is joining morning meetings, flipping through a coloring book, or sharing quiet stories. 

Through every meeting, this match reminds us that it’s not always grand gestures that matter most, but consistency, care, and showing up.
